The ouput of the native equation editor is a PDF image of the typeset formula using the STIX fonts. In LaTeXit, there is a similar workflow: just copy the PDF back and forth between the two applications.

You can easily make the round-trip from LaTeX source to PDF image back to source code in Keynote, by simply double-clicking any formula that was created with the built-in editor. This also means that LaTeX and MathML typesetting are immediately available on the iPad and even iPhone platforms, as well (no more detour via cloud-based services needed).

Native equation functionality in Keynote (and Pages) at long last gives us formula support without having to install any other software - in particular, there's no need for an external TeX distribution. I personally use it, although this page goes through various other (potentially simpler) alternatives before discussing LaTeXit (because it requires a complete TeX installation, which is overkill for casual users). Most of the info below is still valid, but if your presentations only require a few equations then this new built-in functionality may be 'good enough' for you!ДЇor more than a decade, the main equation-editing tool for Keynote has been LaTeXit, and I would still recomment it to anyone who wants advanced functionality such as a formula library, easy control over fonts and dimensions, and the ability to copy/paste equations in numerous different formats (one of which I contributed to, as you can see in the LaTeXiT help document). Recently, HTML presentations have become popular, for example using reveal.js. Keynote is a Mac alternative to power point. Again on the Mac using вЂњPreviewвЂќ to select images from papers makes for easy talk writing. On the mac formulas can be constructed with a package called LaTeXIt. I donвЂ™t know how windows users include formulas. It is possible to give good talks in power point. LyX is a what-you-see-is-what-you-mean type editor for tex, which might make the editing easier.The вЂњbeamerвЂќ package was used to make the advice given above.JCB recommend tikz (a latex package) and inkscape. DT uses Xfig and omnigraffle with LaTeXIt for this purpose, but there are other options. You will also need a way to draw figures.

If all else fails, high resolution screen shots are also an option.

If you are looking for images from papers on the arxiv, downloading the paper source (via вЂњalternative formatsвЂќ on the arxiv web page) might give you the original image files.

Adobe Acrobat and other programs can export images from PDFs.

The command line utility pdfimages can export embedded images from PDFs.

Then include the graphic into the latex source as required.

Just use Preview which has a select tool, and save the graphic as pdf.

MacOS has the ability to cut and paste figures directly in pdf.
